Entre le XI et le XIIème siècle les terres de Rians étaient partagées entre deux familles seigneuriales : Geoffroi de Rians et la maison de Simiane. L’un des représentant de cette dernière famille : Raymond de Guiran de Simiane fit don au chapitre de St Sauveur à Aix de tous ses biens avec leurs juridictions pour la rémission de leurs péchés, parmi ces biens se trouvait la chapelle St Estève. La même année le Comte de Provence confirmait cette donation qui fut suivie à son tour le 28 novembre par le pape Innocent III.

C’est en 1125 qu’on voit autour de la chapelle Saint Estève se former un bourg. En 1186, on dénombre 11 sanctuaires dans la vallée de Rians. Pendant de nombreuses années le culte fut régulièrement célébré dans cette chapelle. Les procès verbaux des visites canoniques de l’évêque en font mention ; la visite effectuée en 1546 recommande la célébration régulière de la messe les dimanches et les jours de fêtes solennelles.

Les offices étaient signalés aux fidèles par une coquille de mer utilisée comme trompe, car il n’y avait pas de cloches.

A partir de la fin du XVIIème siècle, il semble que cette chapelle ne fut plus fréquentée. En 1850 et 1862 un curé doyen de Rians, Amédée Jaubert, fit effectuer d’importantes réparations et la rendit au culte en 1860. Mais en raison de l’éloignement du village ce sanctuaire, qui est le plus ancien de Rians, a été abandonné.

La chapelle Saint Estève devait probablement se situer au bord d’un ancien chemin médiéval passant plus haut qu’aujourd’hui, en direction de Jouques près de Revelette et de ses sources.

Between the 11th and 12th centuries the lands of Rians were divided between two lordly families: Geoffrey of Rians and the house of Simiane. One of the representatives of this last family: Raymond de Guiran de Simiane donated to the chapter of St Sauveur in Aix all his property with their jurisdictions for the remission of their sins, among these properties was the St Estève chapel. The same year the Count of Provence confirmed this donation, which was followed on November 28 by Pope Innocent III.

It was in 1125 that we saw a village form around the Saint Estève chapel. In 1186, there were 11 shrines in the Rians Valley. For many years worship was regularly celebrated in this chapel. The minutes of the Bishop's canonical visits mention this; the visit in 1546 recommends the regular celebration of Mass on Sundays and solemn holidays.

The services were signalled to the faithful by a sea shell used as a trunk, because there were no bells.

From the end of the 17th century, it seems that this chapel was no longer visited. In 1850 and 1862 a dean priest of Rians, Amédée Jaubert, had important repairs carried out and made it available for worship in 1860. But due to the remoteness of the village this sanctuary, which is the oldest in Rians, has been abandoned.

The Saint Estève chapel was probably located on the edge of an old medieval path that goes higher than today, towards Jouques near Revelette and its springs.
