The Grand Masters' palace is build around two courtyards. A pair of recumbent male lions guard the entrance to the doorway leading to the Great Hall located in the southeast corner of the southmost courtyard, the Prince Alfred's Courtyard.
The life-size male lions are carved, in great detail, in stone. They are recumbent near mirror image statues that are facing each each other and set on a two tiered base. Their front paws are overhanging to upper tier.
