Tammy Faye Messner (nee LaValley, and once married to televangelist Jim Bakker) helped build three Christian television networks: the Christian Broadcasting Network with Pat Robertson, the Trinity Broadcasting Network with Paul Crouch, and Praise The Lord ministry with Jim Bakker, her first husband. After the collapse of PTL she divorced Bakker and married megachurch developer Roe Messner, who grew up here in Waldron. She is buried in the Messner family plot next to Roe's mother. Messner has stated that when he passes he will be buried next to Tammy Faye. You may find makeup containers at her grave marker; tokens of affection left by fans and admirers.
Description:
Tammy Faye was best known for her association with televangelist Jim Bakker. Together they founded The PTL CLub, initially hosted in an abandoned furniture warehouse, that mixed "prosperity gospel" with down-home country values. Tammy Faye provided a sentimental touch to stories told on the air and often sang on the program. Her flamboyant style and makeup was a stark contrast to the submissive demeanor of other televangelist spouses and gained her many admirers. The PTL club quickly grew into a multimillion-dollar enterprise and expanded into a Christian theme park. Financial mismanagement and misconduct left Bakker in jail; Tammy Faye divorced him and married Messner. She remained active in ministry and became known as an advocate for gay rights. She passed away after a long battle with cancer.
