L’hôpital Sainte-Marthe d'Avignon est fondé par un juriste, Bernard Rascas, en 1353. Confié aux Trinitaires dès sa création, il devient, dès le xve siècle le principal hôpital d'Avignon. La ville en reprend la gestion xvie siècle. L'augmentation constante des malades le fréquentant, sous l'Ancien Régime, contraint à la reconstruction des bâtiments, par deux fois, au xviie siècle et au xviiie siècle. En 1845, lors de la fermeture de l'ancienne Aumône générale, les pensionnaires sont accueillis, un temps, à l'hôpital Sainte-Marthe, avant leur intégration aux hospice Saint-Louis. A la création du centre hospitalier d'Avignon, en 1982, les pensionnaires furent transférés dans les nouveaux locaux. L'hôpital Sainte-Marthe ferme définitivement en 1994, et les bâtiments rattachés à l'Université d'Avignon et des pays de Vaucluse1.

Sainte-Marthe d'Avignon Hospital was founded by a lawyer, Bernard Rascas, in 1353. Entrusted to the Trinitarians since its creation, it became Avignon's main hospital in the 15th century. The city took over its management in the 16th century. The constant increase in the number of patients visiting it under the Ancien Régime forced the reconstruction of buildings twice, in the 18th century and the 18th century. In 1845, when the former General Almshouse closed, the residents were welcomed, for a time, at Sainte-Marthe Hospital, before being integrated into the Hospice Saint-Louis. When the Avignon hospital was created in 1982, the residents were transferred to the new premises. Sainte-Marthe Hospital closed permanently in 1994, and the buildings attached to the University of Avignon and the Pays de Vaucluse1.

Sainte-Marthe d'Avignon Hospital was listed as a historic monument in three phases on 22 February 1927, 23 May 1951 and 13 September 1988
