"At the foot of the Belfry of Thuin, the royal bust of the knight king occupies the place of honour of the monument to the dead of the two world wars.

Albert I of Belgium was born in 1875 in Brussels and died accidentally in Marche-les-Dames in 1934. In 1909 he succeeded his uncle Leopold II as king of the Belgians. He married Elisabeth, duchess in Bavaria, on 2 October 1900 in Munich. The couple had three children, including the future King Leopold III in 1901, Charles in 1903 and Marie-José in 1906.

During the First World War, after the violation of Belgian neutrality by imperial Germany in August 1914, he resisted the German army and managed to keep a very small part of Belgian territory under his authority. His action earned him the nickname of king knight. From October 1914 onwards, he undertook diplomatic action aimed at restoring peace (contact with the Vatican to influence Austria-Hungary). In 1917, he supported the peace initiative of Prince Sixtus of Bourbon-Parma with Charles I of Habsburg, the new emperor of Austria. French diplomacy will make it fail.

He conceived his role as sovereign as that of an arbitrator; he supported the law of December 1918 instituting universal male suffrage in Belgium. In 1928 he founded the National Fund for Scientific Research."
