This plaque marks the beginning of the Poet's Pathway. See the link cited below.

To visit the plaque, take a stroll along the east side of the pier at Britannia Beach. Emily Pauline Johnson was an aboriginal poet, popular even in her own lifetime. Her poem The Song My Paddle Sings is on this marker, the start of Ottawa's Poets' Pathway.

THE SONG MY PADDLE SINGS
by Emily Pauline Johnson (1961-1913)

The river rolls in its rocky bed;
My paddle is plying its way ahead;
Dip, dip,
While the water flip
In foam as over their breast we slip.

And forward far the rapids roar,
Fretting their margin for evermore.
Dash, dash,
With a mighty crash,
They seethe, and boil, and bound, and splash.

And up on the hills against the sky,
A fir tree rocking its lullaby,
Swings, swings,
Its emerald wings,
Swelling the song that my paddle sings.
