Covering the entire east side of a carriage house, this spirituality mural by Eve Christoph has graced Boltwood Walk in Amherst, Massachusetts, since 1985. Though not as vibrant today, the many colors still clearly show the artist's celebration of otherworldleness.
Pluralistic spirituality is the central theme of this painted art work. Symbols of many religions are suspended among the branches of a tree beside a pond in the middle of a hilly green landscape. Silhouettes of tiny people dance hand-in-hand across the water's surface at the base of the trunk. A great circle of yellow and light red triangles encompasses the tree. A pair of hands - filled with the vast blackness of space dotted by colorful galaxies - reach from ground level to hold up the circle. Included at the far left border is the new-at-the-time Peace Pagoda, the nearby gleaming white Buddhist stupa in Leverett, Massachusetts, which was completed and inaugurated in 1985 around the same time as this mural.
