Standing at this spot you're looking at a formation that challenges the imagination. Atop the hill can be seen a layer of basalt. That layer was once at the bottom of a stream bed. A nearby volcanic eruption filled the stream bed. The material cooled, forming the basalt that can be seen today. The sandstone forming the banks of the wash eroded away, falling below the former bottom of the wash. Inverting the topography, the hard basalt at the bottom of a wash became the crown of a sandstone hill. The basalt has, and will, erode over time but the much softer sandstone has a far greater erosion rate. The freeway cut is perpendicular to the stream bed showing the extent to which erosion has changed the landscape.
