"Une première église romane dédiée à Saint Materne, qui aurait évangélisé la région au IVe siècle, est construite par Oduin, seigneur de Walcourt, et consacrée en 1026 par Réginard, évêque de Liège. Un généreux don d’Oduin permet la fondation d’un chapitre de huit chanoines ; ainsi l’église devient «église collégiale». Reconnaissant sa grande popularité comme sanctuaire marial, Pie XII élève la collégiale Saint-Materne au rang de basilique mineure le 23 mai 1950.

Sise sur un éperon rocheux dominant d’une trentaine de mètres le confluent des rivières d’Eau d'Heure et de l’Yves, la basilique est visible de loin et impressionne par ses dimensions. Son clocher du XVIIe siècle flanqué au départ de la flèche de quatre tourelles et surmonté d’un bulbe caractéristique est l’image emblématique de Walcourt. La flèche fut construite en 1621 par un certain Jean-le- Coustre, maître charpentier à Beaumont, qui avait construit vers 1616 la flèche de l'église de Solre-le-Château dans une forme semblable. Elle fut reconstruite en 1926.

Si certaines parties basses et les fondations trahissent la présence d’un édifice antérieur de style roman l’édifice actuel est largement gothique de style. Le clocher à bulbe est gothique. Le chœur est du XIIIe, de même que les grandes fenêtres géminées. Le transept forme avec le chœur et la nef une croix presque grecque. L’ensemble a 53 mètres de long sur 27 mètres au transept, le clocher s’élevant à 64 mètres.

"A first Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Materne, which would have evangelized the region in the 4th century, was built by Oduin, Lord of Walcourt, and consecrated in 1026 by Réginard, Bishop of Liège. A generous donation from Oduin allowed the foundation of a chapter of eight canons; thus the church became a "collegiate church". Recognizing its great popularity as a Marian shrine, Pius XII raised the collegiate church of Saint-Materne to the rank of a minor basilica on May 23, 1950.

Located on a rocky spur overlooking the confluence of the rivers d'Eau d'Heure and Yves, the basilica is visible from afar and impressive in its dimensions. Its 17th century bell tower, flanked at the beginning by the arrow of four turrets and surmounted by a characteristic bulb, is the emblematic image of Walcourt. The spire was built in 1621 by a certain Jean-le-Coustre, master carpenter in Beaumont, who had built the spire of the church of Solre-le-Château in a similar form around 1616. It was rebuilt in 1926.

If some lower parts and foundations betray the presence of an earlier Romanesque style building, the current building is largely Gothic in style. The bulbous bell tower is Gothic. The choir dates back to the 13th century, as do the large geminated windows. The transept forms an almost Greek cross with the choir and the nave. The complex is 53 metres long and 27 metres long in the transept, with the bell tower rising to 64 metres."
