This is number #6 in the series of Figurative Sculptures that are placed around the Australian Railway Monument. Each sculpture stands about 3 metres high, and is made of countless pieces of stainless rod, of various lengths; and represents a different railway-related occupation. [I think the rods are 12mm diameter.]

The brushed stainless steel plaque is etched, and bolted to concrete 'pathway' that leads through the walls of remembrance of this alleyway to the Sculpture.

#6 FIREMAN / DRIVER

'Progressing through the various ranks associated with his particular calling, the Driver began life on the railways as a Call Boy, moving up to Cleaner, then Fireman and eventually to the position of Driver.

'The railways of this country salute the diligence and ability of these men to serve the people of Australia through safe and responsible devotion to duty, in the face of many obstacles that became part and parcel of every shift.

'The co-workers of the Driver were a hard-working, close-knit group who cherished the friendships born in their many hundreds of working hours together, and maintained those throughout their lives.'
