The Jeanne d'Albret Museum, a history of Bearnese Protestantism, invites you to discover four centuries of history in Béarn, the origins of the Reformation at the beginning of the 20th century. Housed in the House of Jeanne d'Albret, fifteenth century manor house in the heart of the city of Orthez (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the permanent exhibition traces the amazing course of the Huguenots, the rhythm of events Bearn and French.
Who is Jeanne d'Albret? The mother of Henry IV, certainly! Do we know what decisive role she played in Béarn? Calvinist convinced, she governs this small independent country which she wanted to make a Protestant State. But his religious choices had a scope well beyond the duration of his reign; they have profoundly affected the memory, the culture and even the sociology of Béarn.
Also the history of the Protestants is closely related to that of Béarn. It is this common journey that tells the Jeanne d'Albret Museum. He mentions important themes - religious wars, persecutions, clandestinity, secularism, missions, etc. - as well as the great figures that are Jeanne d'Albret and her children Henri IV and Catherine de Bourbon, Elisha Reclus, Felix Pecaut, Eugene Casalis, Albert Cadier ...

Le Musée Jeanne d’Albret, histoire du protestantisme béarnais, vous invite à découvrir quatre siècles d’histoire en Béarn, des origines de la Réforme au début du XXe siècle. Installée dans la Maison de Jeanne d’Albret, gentilhommière du XVe siècle au cœur de la ville d’Orthez (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), l’exposition permanente retrace le parcours étonnant des huguenots, au rythme des événements béarnais et français.
Qui est Jeanne d’Albret ? La mère d’Henri IV, certes ! Sait-on quel rôle déterminant elle a joué en Béarn ? Calviniste convaincue, elle gouverne ce petit pays indépendant dont elle a voulu faire un État protestant. Or ses choix religieux ont eu une portée dépassant largement la durée de son règne ; ils ont marqué profondément la mémoire, la culture voire la sociologie béarnaise.
Aussi l’histoire des protestants est-elle intimement liée à celle du Béarn. C’est ce parcours commun que raconte le Musée Jeanne d’Albret.
