The Crossroads Salamander is on the east side of Cushman Village Common in Amherst, Massachusetts, with parking along Hypotenuse Way. An engraved stone is embedded east of the enormous amphibian and reads:

The nearby salamander crossing tunnels [Waymark Code: WM114RN] sparked Sendelbach's design:

"...Crossroads Salamander, is a stone walkway and bench in the form of a salamander, complete with eyes, feet and a spiraling tail [Sendelbach] created in 1998 for the green at Cushman Village in North Amherst. It is whimsical and at the same time elemental. He was inspired, he says, by the nearby salamander crossing on Henry Street, a specially designed tunnel that allows the amphibians safely to cross the road during their annual springtime migration. The salamander instantly became a popular gathering place.

“People love to come sit here,” Sendelbach said. “And little kids love to run around the spiral.”
