Smithsonian Art Inventory

"The work visually and symbolically refers to the Bandiagara Escarpment, steep cliffs which stretch for 125 miles parallel to the Niger River in the Republic of Mali in West Africa. The sculptural elements on the pieces represent the paintings and carved reliefs on the actual cliffs. These reliefs and paintings depict the mythic ancestry of the Dogon Society of Mali, including the mythic star, Sirius."
