The following is from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum's Website:

A late decision was taken to restore this Spanish-built version of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 so it could be displayed in the new building. To expedite the work, the restoration was not as complete as usual and the engine was not stripped down. However, the fuselage was stripped of all equipment and everything was cleaned, repaired and reinstalled. The fuselage itself required some skin repairs, and missing access panels had to be replaced, but it was generally complete. The wings required some skin repairs and a new clear plastic navigation lightcover, together with the usual cleaning and refinishing.

The aircraft was refinished in its original Spanish Air Force markings. The restoration was completed in early November 1986. A number of these aircraft have been restored in German markings to represent the World War II Messerschmitt Bf 109, but the inverted Vee Daimler-Benz engine of the German-built Bf 109 resulted in quite amarked difference in appearance to the Spanish-built machine with its Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, so a reasonable reproduction is not possible without re-engining the machine and other detail changes. This is a substantial job and in the majority of cases has not been done.
