La mine Niobec de Saint-Honoré, située au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean à environ 200 kilomètres au nord de la ville de Québec, est la seule exploitation souterraine de niobium dans le monde et l’un des trois principaux producteurs mondiaux de ce minerai. Sa production varie actuellement de 8 à 10 % du volume mondial de niobium dépendamment de la variation de l’offre et de la demande d’une année à l’autre.
Depuis 1994, Niobec est devenue un véritable complexe minier et métallurgique intégré, grâce à la construction d’une usine de conversion du concentré de niobium (Nb2O5) en ferroniobium(FeNb), ce qui lui a permis de se classer parmi les producteurs mondiaux de ferroniobium. La conversion est effectuée sur place à l’aide d’une réaction aluminothermique. Le concentré de pyrochlore est mélangé à plusieurs matières premières, dont des granules d’aluminium, du fer métallique, du nitrate de sodium et des matières fines recyclées, avant d’être transféré dans un réacteur. Le ferroniobium, concassé aux dimensions exigées par chaque aciérie, est ensuite empaqueté dans des contenants de 10 à 1 500 kilogrammes et expédié partout dans le monde.
The Niobec mine is located in the municipality of Saint-Honoré in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, approximately 200 kilometres north of Québec city. It is the only underground niobium mine, and one of the three main niobium producers in the world. The mine’s current production accounts for approximately 8 to 10% of the world’s production which varies according to the shifts in global supply and demand from year to year.
In 1994, Niobec became a true integrated mining and metallurgy complex with the construction of a conversion plant that converts niobium concentrate (Nb2O5) into ferroniobium (FeNb). This has allowed Niobec to place itself among the leading international ferroniobium producers. The conversion of the niobium concentrate into ferroniobium (FeNb) is performed on site by way of thermite reaction. The conversion is conducted on site using a thermite reaction. The pyrochlore concentrate is mixed with several raw materials including aluminum granules, metallic iron, sodium nitrate and recycled fine materials before being transferred to a reactor. This combination produces a powerful exothermic reaction that generates enough heat to bring the temperature up to 2,250ºC, thus melting the entire load in less than 10 minutes. A typical load of 6,400 kg generates 2,400 kg of ferroniobium. Following a cooling period, the ferroniobium is crushed to sizes specified by various steel plants, packaged in 10 to 1,500 kg containers, and shipped worldwide.
