The 105MM Howitzer was first introduced in 1940 to provide close support to infantry. After the US entered World War II modifications were made, mainly increased front shielding.

It was used successfully by the US and its allies during World War 2 and Korea, but proved impractical in Vietnam.

A great overview may be found here: (visit link)

The M101, and many more specimens are located along the Heritage trail located at the US Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle. The trails are open daily from dawn until dusk. Admission is free.
