The earliest records of mining in this area are from the 1690s. The ruins of today, what is seen within the images are from when the min was last worked between 1872 and 1914
The ruin nearest to the sea has been restored by the National Trust.
The main Engine house, The Towanroath shaft engine house was restored by the National Trust in 1973 and the remainder of the site in 1986 and manged by the Trust since then.
The whole site has been designated a grade 2 listed buildings status
Over its lifetime the mine produced 717 tons of tin and 335 tons of copper. The mine followed a seam of ore running out under the sea bed, but had to be abandoned when the seam proved to be unprofitable.
