LONG_SAULT STONE RETAINING WALL AT SOUTH SIDE OF LOWER ENTRANCE TO LOCK NO. 19, CORNWALL CANAL, 1.9 KM WEST OF NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILWAY BRIDGE, 105 M EAST OF LOWER GATE OF LOCK, BOLT IN EAST FACE OF WALL, 1.4 M FROM NORTH EDGE, 12 CM BELOW TOP.

This vertical marker from 1919 is getting old and worn. The greenish bolt is just below the top of the retaining wall, a wall which is suffering from decades of erosion. Under perfect conditions, the roman numeral identification inscribed in the wall near the marker might be visible. Considering how much technology has changed in 100 years, I am not surprised that the published co-ordinates are out by more than 100 metres.

For easy access to this marker, start near the Kinsmen soccer house along the south side of Second Street West in Cornwall. Hike across all of the canal lock and use the Waterfront Trail, heading east.
