Padre Felix Varela Y Morales was a leading advocate for the abolition of slavery in Cuba. In 1821 Varela was chosen to represent Cuba in the Cortes Generales of Spain in Madrid, where he joined in a petition to the Crown for the independence of Latin America, and also published an essay which argued for the abolition of slavery in Cuba. He was sentenced to death by the government.

He fled to Gibraltar and then to the United States where, through his writings, espoused human rights as well as religious tolerance. He was a pioneer in the social welfare movement of the 19th century and was a champion for Irish immigrants who left Ireland as refugees of great Irish Famine of 1845 - 1849.
