Tennessee is a long way from the island-dotted waters of Washington State's San Juan County, but at age 38 Daniel Webster Clark moved his family from the Volunteer State to the Evergreen State.
He followed his brother, Noah, into being an assistant lighthouse keeper after Noah's drowning in 1911. Noah, his wife Mary, and daughter were returning to Patos Island from Blaine when the weather turned and their boat swamped with water. Noah swam towards Patos Island, where he was serving as the assistant lighthouse keeper, in an effort to save his family. Sadly he drowned in the attempt.
Between December 24, 1911 – December 31, 1911, Daniel served as the 1st Assistant Lighthouse Keeper at Patos Island. After this the records are spotty, however, there is a reference of Daniel serving at the Semiahmoo Light at Blaine during the 1930s.
