The Columbus Garden Club dedicated an oak tree to the memory of Christopher Reed Kilpatrick on Arbor Day 2007, two years after he had died in action in Iraq.

Christopher Reed Kilpatrick was born in Houston, TX, grew up in Columbus, TX, and died in combat 20 June 2005 during the Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign. He enlisted in 2004 and right after high school graduation, went on active duty. After basic training and a course in Advanced Individual Training, he was deployed with the 603rd Transportation Company, 142nd corps Support Battalion. While his units moving as a convoy his vehicle was hit by enemy fire. After a short battle, he died from his wounds. PFC Kilpatrick was returned to Columbus where the was buried with military honors. Posthumously, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation medals.
In subsequent years, The Christopher Kilpatrick Memorial Center has been named after him and a life-sized colored bronze statue of him in uniform has been placed ion display in his honor as a memorial to the soldiers, like him, who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The plaque at the base of the dedicated tree reads as follows:
