New Mills is close to the confluence of the river Goyt and river Sett which at this point cut through a deep sandstone gorge. The town is positioned at the top of the gorge cliffs and because of this transport in the area was always difficult before high level bridges were built across the rivers.

This bridge is lower than some of the road bridges because after crossing the river Sett it enters a short tunnel at the north west end and then enters New Mills Central station.

The bridge carries The Hope Valley line which is a trans-Pennine railway line linking Sheffield with Manchester. The bridge is between New Mills Central and Chinley railway stations.
