He was born on November 29, 1842 in Frederick, MD and died on September 22, 1917 in Baltimore, MD. He attained the rank of Brevet Captain in the Union Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: SMITH, FRANCIS M.

Citation: Voluntarily remained with the body of his regimental commander under a heavy fire after the brigade had retired and brought the body off the field.
