Stripfiguur Eric de Noorman ruimt het veld voor nieuwbouw
ARNHEM - Eric de Noorman en Svein Langtand houden Station Arnhem Centraal niet langer gevangen in hun norse blik. Het enorme doek met de stripfiguren op het Stationsplein is na 10 jaar weggehaald.
Tegen de gevel waaraan de afbeelding hing, wordt een nieuw gebouw gezet. Het doek werd in 2006 opgehangen, 60 jaar nadat de strip Eric de Noorman van Hans G. Kresse voor het eerst werd gepubliceerd. Overleden De Arnhemse tekenaar overleed in 1992. In de hele stad werden dat jaar 17 gebouwen getooid met enorme tekeningen. Van Kresse zelf, maar ook hommages aan zijn werk van andere tekenaars. Zodra je het centraal station uitloopt, zie je ze staan. Fier rechtop, stoer en sterk. Een enorme afbeelding van twee Vikingen. Misschien weet jij al lang wie dit zijn, misschien ook niet. Vandaag geven wij in ieder geval antwoord op de vraag ‘wie zijn toch die Vikingen bij het station’?
Om maar meteen met de deur in huis te vallen, het gaat om Eric de Noorman en Svein Langtand. Eric is een stoere Vikingkoning. Bedacht door Hans G. Kresse (1921-1992), een bekende Nederlandse striptekenaar, die de laatste jaren van zijn leven in Doorwerth doorbracht. Samen met Kapitein Rob en Tom Poes behoort Eric de Noorman tot de ‘grote drie’ uit de Nederlandse stripgeschiedenis. Eric de Noorman werd van 1946 tot 1964 als krantenstrip gepubliceerd. De verhalen draaien rond de Vikingkoning en zijn avonturen overzee. De strips waren vooral aan het begin van de vijftiger jaren enorm populair. Op het hoogtepunt van zijn roem, werden er jaarlijks meer dan 300.000 stripboekjes van Eric de Noorman verkocht.
Allemaal Noormannen in Arnhem
Op 27 september 2006 werd in Arnhem het startschot gegeven voor een indrukwekkende hommage aan Hans G. Kresse. De tekenaar zou op 3 december 2006 85 jaar geworden zijn. En het was 60 jaar geleden dat Kresse zijn stripepos over Eric de Noorman begon. De speciaal voor dat doel opgerichte Stichting Kresse-Strips-Arnhem ontplooide een aantal projecten, waarvan het onderdeel ‘Eric de Noorman op de Arnhemse muren’. Eenentwintig tekeningen van Hans Kresse en van een tiental andere striptekenaars, werden op doeken tot wel 160 vierkante meter aan Arnhemse muren opgehangen. De Viking bij het station is daar nog een mooie herinnering aan.
Wat er met de andere doeken is gebeurd, weten wij niet. Een nieuw mysterie?

Kresse (1921-1992), a well-known Dutch cartoonist, who spent the last years of his life in Doorwerth. Together with Captain Rob and Tom Poes, Eric the Norseman is one of the 'big three' in Dutch comic history. Eric de Noorman was published as a newspaper comic from 1946 to 1964. The stories revolve around the Viking King and his adventures overseas. The comics were extremely popular, especially in the early fifties. At the height of his fame, more than 300,000 Eric de Noorman comic books were sold every year.
All Norsemen in Arnhem
On 27 September 2006, an impressive homage to Hans G. Kresse was kicked off in Arnhem. The artist would have become 85 years old on December 3, 2006. And it was 60 years ago that Kresse started his comic book about Eric the Norseman. The Kresse-Strips-Arnhem Foundation, which was set up especially for this purpose, developed a number of projects, including the section 'Eric the Norseman on the walls of Arnhem'. Twenty-one drawings by Hans Kresse and a dozen other cartoonists were hung on canvases of up to 160 square metres on walls in Arnhem. The Viking at the station is a nice reminder of this.
We don't know what happened to the other paintings. A new mystery?
