405 Elm [should read 405 Cedar, 405 Elm modern structure & is Non-Contributing] is the only District building which exhibits Second Empire features; Its mansard roof is a rare example In Washington's domestic architecture. The Italianate corbelled brick cornice, on the other hand, is not uncommon. The scrolled window surround on the large mansard dormer suggests Queen Anne influence." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
