The track to Silica Springs passes across the slopes of Mt Ruapehu, a volcanic mountain in Tongariro National Park. It crosses alpine marshes and boggy areas and around the actual Springs and Rapids is an area of boardwalk to protect the ground from erosion and damage to delicate vegetation. There are information boards along the way to explain various features. The boardwalk allows access to the stream edge to view the silica formation from an extended boardwalk platform with seats.

The Silica Rapids loop track begins at the Whakapapa Holiday Camp on Bruce Rd, crossing the river on a footbridge, climbing slowly up to the Springs and returning across the upper track to Bruce Rd, an easy 4.7 km walk that will take you around 2 hours 10 mins.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 500

What is the boardwalk over?:
Fragile tusock, marsh and bog water areas around Silica Springs on Mt Ruapehu.

Boardwalk material: Wood boards with steps between varying levels, covered with mesh for grip in ice and snow.
