Famous for its legend, the valley of the Well of Hell represents an area of ??ecological interest whose biological interest is major because of the presence of rare species: dominant woody vegetation, very diversified flora, 4 floristic currents can be observed : Atlantic, riverside, submediterranean and submontane. You will have a panoramic view of the collapse ditch of Saint-Maixent and more broadly on the landscape. You will reach it by a small climbing and steep road (D 121) connecting Saint Maixent to Fomperron. Before arriving at Exireuil, on your right (coming from Saint-Maixent), the path of the Well of Hell will take you to the point of entry of the pedestrian paths. A large car park and an unobstructed view of the valley await you. There is a picnic area on site.
Legend of the Well of Hell:
A brave peasant from Exireuil, with meadows at Nanteuil, came one Sunday morning to take a glance, just before mass, on the field which he had mowed the day before. The grass was beautiful and dry; she would be of a good profit for her animals and for the sale. But here on the horizon appears a little black cloud presaging the storm. It was Sunday, the day of the Lord. Would he lose all the reward of his work? No, it was impossible! So here he is, hastening back to the stable and hitching up his oxen. Now, at that time, to go from his farm to his pasture, he had to cross the brook of the Well of Hell, above the fall and the waters were still large. The journey went very well; loading too. On the return, the sun which had disappeared having not been able to dry all the drops of water on the rocks, one of the oxen slipped, dragging the other animal, the cart, the harvest and the brave peasant.
It all fell into the Well of Hell and no one ever saw them again.

Célèbre pour sa légende, le vallon du Puits d’Enfer représente une zone d’intérêt écologique dont l’intérêt biologique est majeur du fait de la présence d’espèces rares : végétation boisée dominante, flore très diversifiée, 4 courants floristiques peuvent être observés : atlantique, bord de cours d’eau, subméditerranéen et submontagnard. Vous y aurez une vue panoramique sur le fossé d’effondrement de Saint-Maixent et plus largement sur le paysage. Vous y accéderez par une petite route grimpante et escarpée (D 121 ) reliant Saint Maixent à Fomperron. Avant d’arriver à Exireuil, sur votre droite (en venant de Saint-Maixent), le chemin du Puits d’Enfer vous emmènera au point d’entrée des parcours pédestres. Un vaste parking et un point de vue imprenable sur la vallée vous attendent. Vous trouverez sur place une aire de pique nique.
Légende du Puits d’Enfer :
Un brave paysan d’Exireuil possédant des prairies à Nanteuil vint, un dimanche matin, jeter un coup d’œil, juste avant la messe, sur le champ qu’il avait fauché la veille. L’herbe était belle et bien sèche ; elle serait d’un bon profit pour ses bêtes et pour la vente. Mais voici qu’à l’horizon paraît un petit nuage noir présageant l’orage. C’était le dimanche, le jour du Seigneur. Allait-il perdre toute la récompense de son travail ? Non, c’était impossible ! Alors, le voici revenant en hâte à l’écurie et attelant ses bœufs. Or, à cette époque, pour aller de sa ferme à son pâturage, il fallait traverser le ruisseau du Puits d’Enfer, au-dessus de la chute et les eaux étaient encore grandes. Le voyage aller se passa fort bien ; le chargement aussi. Au retour, le soleil qui avait disparu n’ayant pu sécher toutes les gouttes d’eau sur les rochers, l’un des bœufs glissa, entraînant l’autre animal, la charrette, la récolte et le brave paysan.
Le tout tomba dans le Puits d’Enfer et personne ne les revit jamais.
