FR Sur la grande place du village, près de l'église de Saumane, on peut voir ce monument aux morts dédiés aux soldats de Saumane, tombés durant la première guerre mondiale dans les tranchées de Verdun.
C'est un pilier sur le quel est gravé sur la face avant, tout en haut, "Verdun", nom d'une bataille ayant entraînée le décès de plus de 700 000 soldats, 362 000 soldats français et 337 000 allemands, une moyenne de 70 000 victimes pour chacun des dix mois de la bataille.
En dessous, on peut lire le nom des soldats de Saumane
Plus bas encore, on peut lire : "Aux enfants de SAUMANE, Morts pour la France
La mention "Aux enfants de Saumane" ne signifie pas que les habitants ont envoyés les enfants se battre à leur place ou que des mineurs ont été exécutés par l'occupant. Ce mémorial est un mémorial militaire mais cette formule "aux enfants de ..." suivi du nom de la ville signifie qu'ils sont nés dans la ville.

EN On the main square of the village, near the church of Saumane, you can see this monument to the dead dedicated to Saumane's soldiers, who fell during the First World War in the trenches of Verdun.
It is a pillar on which is engraved on the front face, at the very top, "Verdun", the name of a battle resulting in the deaths of more than 700,000 soldiers, 362,000 French and 337,000 German, an average of 70,000 victims for each of the ten months of the battle.

Even lower, it reads: "To the children of SAUMANE, Dead for France
The mention "To the children of Saumane" does not mean that the inhabitants sent the children to fight in their place or that minors were executed by the occupant. This memorial is a military memorial but this formula "to the children of..." followed by the name of the city means that they were born in the city.
