In this device, Royan occupies a strategic position, controlling, with the Pointe de Grave, the access to the ports of the Gironde and in particular that of Bordeaux. From 1942, the city and its region became a fortress of the Atlantic Wall in the South West, bristling with defensive works and sown with mines.
