England wears a belt. Well, it’s more like a sash that extends from the English Channel near the Isle of Portland, northeast to Yorkshire and it’s made of limestone. Known as the “limestone belt,” its quarries have produced the lion’s share of stone used for building throughout the region. Since it’s difficult to transport the limestone over great distances, the buildings in a particular region often reflect the color and character of the stone found there. Somerset County lies near the southern end of this limestone belt and has deposits of several distinct varieties of the building material, namely Blue Lias limestone, the white-ish Mendip stone and a honey-colored Hamstone often used for decorative accents.

The churches of Somerset are known for their towers especially the way they blend in with the surrounding countryside. As Simon Jenkins says in his book ‘England’s Thousand Best Churches,’ “[t]hey offer the perfection of English building set in the perfection of English countryside.” One of the best examples of these church towers is St. Mary’s in Huish Episcopi. Made of Blue Lias with Hamstone dressings, it features four Gothic stages divided by friezes of quatrefoils with an abundance of pinnacles. It is a Grade I listed building in England.

In 1972, Great Britain issued a set of five stamps featuring five different village churches. St. Mary’s in Huish Episcopi was represented on the highest value in the set. And, as I have often experienced when it come to churches featured on stamps, there’s a tree blocking the best philatelic view.
