Jerry Wayne Hazelip served on the Kemp City Council for two years, and was helping the city as a favor by finishing another member's uncompleted term when he passed on of a heart attack in 2014. He served on the boards of directors of the Kemp Economic Development Corp., the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake and the Celebration on the Lake Church, oftentimes taking leadership roles.

This stage was named for him, and its development was one of the last projects on which he worked: So beloved was he that there were plans to name the stage for him while he was still alive. The stage is constructed from a venerable truss bridge that once took traffic across King's Creek on the outskirts of town. A mural of guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan was completed here in 2018, and conservation efforts were made to establish a watershed.

The memorial plaque is mounted on a marble base, and below a likeness of Mr. Hazelip it reads:

This stage is dedicated to the memory of Jerry Wayne Hazelip in sincere appreciation for his service to the community he loved. As an example to all, he served his community and those in it, without hesitation or regret. He was a trusted neighbor, true friend and helper of those in need, both man and beast alike. Jerry was always ready with a bright smile, hearty laugh or warm embrace to lift those around him. Thank you, Jerry, for your hard work, civic leadership and love for your community.

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. it's not. ~ Dr. Seuss
