"The library was founded in 1886. It takes its name from Samuel-Aimé Forney, an industrialist particularly interested in vocational training and crafts that proposed in testament to the City of Paris to create a" popular library. "

Located in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, an industrial district in the 11th and 12th arrondissements of Paris, the library offers workers and craftsmen who wish to improve their skills a documentation centering on the decoration, stone, wood and metal industries. ceramics and fabrics.

The success and the frequentation of the library make its premises quickly insufficient and in 1929, the principle of the transfer of the library to the hotel of Sens is adopted. This building, built between 1475 and 1519, is one of the few vestiges of civil medieval architecture in Paris. The installation of the library, however, only intervenes after a long renovation in 1961, under the direction of Jean-Pierre Paquet, chief architect of the Historic Monuments, assisted by Roger Maudhuit, an ordinary architect.

The collections can then be developed and enriched by documents devoted to the fine arts (painting, sculpture, architecture, drawing, engraving) and graphic arts (by integrating the fonds of the Graphic Arts Library, previously kept at the town hall of the 6th arrondissement of Paris).

They also include many foreign works, including Anglo-Saxon, Italian, Slav and Chinese. Documentary politics currently focuses on the fields of fashion and costume, garden art, iconography and the history of printing. "
