He was born on August 2, 1832 in Salisbury, NH and died on June 1, 1922 in Hartford, VT. He was Governor of Vermont 1884-1886. He attained the rank of Colonel in the Union Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: PINGREE, SAMUEL E.

• Entered service at: Hartford, Vt.
• Date of issue: 17 August 1891
Citation: Gallantly led his company across a wide, deep creek, drove the enemy from the rifle pits, which were within 2 yards of the farther bank, and remained at the head of his men until a second time severely wounded.
