The printed metal sign is sngled slightly on a metal sheet base, and close to a cylindrical concrete block that still has some large steel cable and cable clamps attached to it. [Not wheelchair accessible.] The sign reads:
Edwards Beach Shark Net: 1935 - 2008
"In the early 1900s, public swimming had become increasingly popular and many residents and beach users enjoyed bathing at Balmoral. A number of fatal shark attacks occured in Middle Harbour in those early years. Public fears began to spread and the local community urged Council to put in some shark protection measures.
"At that time, Council initiated Various shark proof schemes. One of the most controversial schemes was the safety bathing enclosure scheme in 1930 which proposed to erect a wooden sharf proof barrier along the length of Edwards Beach. Each swimmer was to be charged one penny for admission. Immediately local groups called for 'Hands Off Our Beach'.
"Following years of public debtae, a shark net was erected in 1935. The net was suspended between steel cables which extended from the anchor posts in front of you to a steel tripod tower located on a small rock outcrop at the northern end of Edwards Beach.

"- right in front of you, the anchor posts and segment of the steel cables.
- to your left across the ater and near the sands, there are two concrete foundation blocks which supported a steel tripod tower."
