The sign and map near the entrance to the Botanic Garden has the following information:

"This oasis was once a disused stone quarry. It was officially dedicated by the NSW Government in 1957 for the promotion, study and preservation of Australian native flora. Since it opened in 1961, it has been extensively weeded, regenerated and revegetated. The flora reserve was established as a native botanic garden in 2007. It is managed by Warringah Council and maintained with the aid of a dedicated group of volunteers." [ex-sign]

While spring is the best time to see the bright colours of Australian flowers, it is beautiful all year round. "Intricate walkways take visitors to a variety of microclimates. The main circuit takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and in 2013 was extended to include the accessible sensory track - where people of all abilities can experience the Australian bush like never before. Signs along the sensory track point to plants you can touch, taste, smell, and look at, to observe the garden with all your senses. There are also side tracks for the energetic and inquisitive."
