Am 09.04.1997 ist hier der Hubschrauberpilot Henry Allewohl verunglückt. Er flog eine Hughes 500, um Baumaterial vom Parkplatz im Ahrtal zur Burg Are hinaufzubefördern. Dieses wurde zur Sanierung der Burg und des Berghangs darunter benötigt. Die Last hing dabei an Seilen unterhalb des Hubschraubers. Nach etwa 30 erfolgreichen Flügen verfing sich eins der Seile an den Kufen des Hubschraubers, er geriet in Schieflage und kollidierte mit der Eisenbahnbrücke über dem Parkplatz in der Nähe des Tunneleingangs. Henry Allewohl verstarb kurze Zeit später an den davongetragenen Verletzungen.

Der Ort des tragischen Unglücks ist heute weitestgehend noch so wie damals: Der Parkplatz an der Ahr mit der Eisenbahnbrücke darüber existiert nach wie vor, es wurde lediglich eins der Bahngleise zu einem Radweg umgebaut. An einem Brückenpfeiler wurde eine Gedenktafel für Henry Allewohl angebracht.
On 4/9/1997 the helicopter pilot Henry Allewohl crashed here. He flew a Hughes 500 to lift construction material from the parking lot in the Ahr valley up to the castle Burg Are. This was needed to refurbish the castle and the hillside below. The load hung on ropes below the helicopter. After about 30 successful flights, one of the ropes caught on the skids of the helicopter, he got into trouble and collided with the railway bridge over the parking lot near the tunnel entrance. A short time later, Henry Allewohl died of his injuries.

The place of the tragic accident is still largely as it was then: The parking lot on the Ahr with the railway bridge over it still exists, it was only one of the railway tracks converted into a bike path. At a bridge pier a commemorative plaque for Henry Allewohl was attached.
