Früher war es üblich, besonders auffällige Bäume als Grenzmarkierungen zwischen verschiedenen Verwaltungseinheiten und Besitztümern heranzuziehen. Ein solcher Grenzbaum war der Kamelleboom hier mitten im Kottenforst. Er markierte angeblich von 1477 bis 1977 die Grenze zwischen den sogenannten "alten Herrlichkeiten" Alfter und Heimerzheim. Auch heute verläuft hier noch die Grenze zwischen den beiden Gemeinden. Seinen Namen und regionale Bekanntheit hat der Baum durch einen alten Brauch, Kindern hier angeblich vom Baum hergestellte Süßigkeiten zu schenken.

Ab der frühen Neuzeit wurden die Grenzbäume zunehmend durch Grenzsteine mit Eingravierungen wie Zeichen, Buchstaben oder Wappen ersetzt. Als der Grenzbaum 1977 von einem Forstfahrzeug umgefahren wurde, wurden einige solcher in der Umgebung gefundenen Grenzsteine hier zusammengetragen. Es handelt sich dabei um Grenzsteine zwischen Alfter und Bornheim, einen Fixpunkt einer Landvermessung von 1797, einen Grenzstein des Herren von Metternich und einige weitere. Bei meinem Besuch konnte ich sechs verschiedene Steine zählen, und keiner gleicht dem anderen.

Die Grenzsteine sind rings um den zentralen Originalplatz des Grenzbaums am Wegesrand aufgestellt. Inzwischen ist dort eine neue Linde angepflanzt worden, der Stamm des alten Kamellebooms steht etwas abseits des Platzes in einen Betonsockel eingefaßt. Manche der Steine sind noch relativ gut erhalten und fallen sofort ins Auge, andere sind dagegen schon zugewachsen oder mit Moos bewachsen.

Der Ort liegt mitten im Naturschutzgebiet Kottenforst und kann daher natürlich nicht direkt mit dem Auto angefahren werden. Es kreuzen aber mehrere Waldwege den Platz, die bequem zu Fuß oder mit dem Fahrrad genutzt werden können. Der nächste Wanderparkplatz ist bei N50°44.229 E6°58.432 in der Nähe der Golfanlage Römerhof, von da aus ist ca. 1,5 km lang den Wegen zu folgen.
In the past, it was customary to use particularly striking trees as boundary marks between different administrative units and properties. Such a border tree was the Kamelleboom right here in the middle of the forest Kottenforst. It marked allegedly from 1477 to 1977 the border between the so-called "old glories" Alfter and Heimerzheim. Even today, the border between the two municipalities still runs here. The tree has its name and regional fame through an old rite to give candy to children allegedly made by the tree.

From the early modern period, the boundary trees were increasingly replaced by boundary stones with engravings such as signs, letters or coats of arms. When the border tree was overturned by a forest vehicle in 1977, some of these boundary stones found in the area were collected here. These are boundary stones between Alfter and Bornheim, a fixed point of a land survey of 1797, a boundary stone of the Lord of Metternich and a few more. During my visit, I could count six different stones, and no one is the same.

The boundary stones are placed around the central original place of the border tree at the wayside. Meanwhile, a new linden tree has been planted there, the trunk of the old Kamelleboom is set off the square in a concrete base. Some of the stones are still relatively well preserved and immediately catch the eye, while others are already overgrown with moss.

The place is located in the middle of the nature reserve Kottenforst and therefore, of course, can not be approached directly by car. But there are several forest paths that cross the square, which can be easily used on foot or by bicycle. The next hiking car park is at N50°44.229 E6°58.432 near the Römerhof golf course, from there you have to follow the forest paths for about 1.5 km.
