Am 06.02.2000 kurz nach Mitternacht ereignete sich im Brühler Bahnhof ein tragischer Unfall: Ein Schweizer Fernverkehrszug mit 201 Reisenden entgleiste auf einer abknickenden Weiche im Bahnhof bei einer Geschwindigkeit von 122 km/h. Eigentlich hätte die Weiche mit maximal 40 km/h passiert werden dürfen. Die entgleiste Lok und mehrere Wagen stürzten eine Böschung herab in Gärten von Anwohnern, ein Wohnhaus wurde so stark beschädigt, dass es später abgerissen werden musste. Ein Wagen des Zuges stellte sich im Bahnhof quer und wurde so stark gegen die Bahnsteigüberdachung gedrückt, dass er in der Mitte durchgeknickt ist. Andere Wagen stürzten neben den Gleisen um. Neun Fahrgäste kamen dabei ums Leben, 149 wurden verletzt.

Der Grund für die überhöhte Geschwindigkeit des Zuges und somit die Schuld an dem Unfall ist umstritten und kompliziert. Klar ist, dass aufgrund von Bauarbeiten das normale Durchgangsgleis gesperrt war und die Züge auf ein Nachbargleis umgeleitet werdern mussten. Aufgrund von wiedersprüchlichen Beschilderungen auf dem Streckenabschnitt vor dem Bahnhof sowie falschen Eintragungen im Streckenbuch war dem Zugführer aber die erlaubte Geschwindigkeit zum Durchfahren des Baustellenbereichs nicht ersichtlich. In einem Gerichtsprozess 2001 konnte kein Hauptschuldiger ausgemacht werden und die Verfahren gegen alle Beschuldigten wurden eingestellt.

Es dauerte etwa eine Woche, alle Wagen des Zuges zu bergen. Bei der anschließenden Reperatur des Bahnhofs wurde das Gleis 3, auf dem sich der Unfall ereignete, entfernt und eine Schallschutzmauer an der Stelle errichtet. Vom Bahnsteig von Gleis 2 aus sieht man heute noch deutlich, wo sich das Gleis einmal befand: Die weiße Abstandslinie und die ehemalige Bahnsteigkante sind noch vor der neuen Schallschutzmauer erkennbar, dahinter sieht man die damals betroffenen Wohnhäuser mit ihren Gärten. Das beschädigte Haus wurde wieder neu aufgebaut.
Shortly after midnight on 02/06/2000, a tragic accident occurred at the Brühl train station: a Swiss long-distance train with 201 passengers derailed at a deviating turnout in the station at a speed of 122 km/h. Actually, the turnout could have been passed with a maximum of 40 km/h. The derailed locomotive and several cars fell down an embankment in gardens of local residents, a house was so badly damaged that it later had to be demolished. One car of the train stood in the station crosswise and was pressed so hard against the platform roof that it was folded in the middle. Other cars collapsed next to the tracks. Nine passengers were killed and 149 injured.

The reason for the excessive speed of the train and thus the blame for the accident is controversial and complicated. It is clear that due to construction, the normal transit track was blocked and the trains had to be redirected to a neighboring track. Due to contradictory signs on the section in front of the station as well as false entries in the route book, the driver was not aware of the permitted speed for driving through the construction site area. In a court case in 2001, no major culprit could be identified and proceedings against all the accused were dropped.

It took about a week to recover all the cars of the train. During the subsequent repair of the station, the track 3, on which the accident occurred, was removed and a sound barrier was built at the site. From the platform of track 2 you can still clearly see where the track once was: the white distance line and the former edge of the platform can still be seen in front of the new soundproofing wall, behind it you can see the then affected residential buildings with their gardens. The damaged house was rebuilt.
