OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City fans lined up Friday to see Black Panther, the much-anticipated movie featuring Marvel's first black superhero.

"The majority of my school's going to see it this weekend," said Jaden McDaniel, who went to see the movie Friday night at Harkins Theater in Bricktown. "Some people saw it last night at midnight."

Harkins Theater had 24 showings of Black Panther Friday and most of them were full. According to Forbes Magazine, the movie sold more advance tickets than any other superhero movie, and experts predict the movie will break box office records.

It's the first Marvel film with not only a black lead, but also a predominately black cast.

"Most importantly, this is a superhero movie about a person of color, who is of African ancestry," said Kimberly Francisco, manager at Ralph Ellison Library in Oklahoma City. "So being able to bring that here, to this community, for children of color to see a superhero not merely an actor of color playing the part, but a superhero that was how he was intended, so to offer that to this community is of utmost importance to me and my staff."

The library hosted a release party for the film on Thursday evening. Dozens of kids turned out to the event.

Football star and Oklahoma City native Sterling Shepard is hosting a free screening of the movie this Sunday. It's open to kids 5th grade and below. The showing is at 3 p.m. at Cinemark Tinseltown on Martin Luther King Ave. Seating is first come, first served.
