Ici reposent les corps des soldats d’infanterie de Sa Majesté qui se noyèrent dans les eaux de la rivière Black le 11 août 1814.

“Sacré à la mémoire de Lieut. James Henderson, un sous-officier et 31 soldats du 81e Régiment of Foot de Sa Majesté qui se sont noyés en traversant la Rivière Noire le 11 août 1814 alors qu’ils se trouvaient sur leur chemin pour rencontrer l’ennemi. Ce monument érigé par les citoyens de Trois-Rivières est l’expression de leurs regrets pour un événement aussi mélancolique. "

81ème Régiment d'infanterie (Loyal Lincoln Volunteers)

Pendant ce temps, le 1er bataillon, avec le reste de sa brigade, a été transféré d'Espagne à l'Amérique du Nord, à la suite de l'abdication de Napoléon. Arrivé en août 1814, le 1er bataillon débarqua à Québec et reçut l'ordre de se déplacer vers le sud. Cependant, le 1er bataillon a manqué les grands engagements de la campagne de 1814.

Monument to the soldiers of the 81st Regiment of Foot

Here lie the bodies of Her Majesty's infantrymen who drowned in the waters of the Black River on August 11, 1814.

“Sacred to the memory of Lieut. James Henderson, one non commissioned officer and 31 privates of His Majesty’s 81st Regiment of Foot who were drowned in crossing the Black River the 11th of August, 1814 while on their route to meet the enemy. This monument erected by the citizens of Three Rivers as expression of their regret for so melancholy an occurrence."

Meanwhile, the 1st battalion, along with the rest of its brigade was transferred, upon Napoleon's abdication, from Spain to North America. Arriving in August 1814, the 1st battalion landed in Quebec and was ordered to move south. However, the 1st battalion missed the major engagements of the 1814 campaign.
