Preservation Houston Walking Tour: Beth Israel Cemetery
(visit link)

When Beth Israel Cemetery was established in 1844, it was located well outside the small town of Houston. Over the years, the city grew up around the cemetery and Beth Israel became the resting place of many of Houston's most prominent Jewish residents, including merchant families such as the Levys, Meyers and Sakowitzes, philanthropist Ben Taub and Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel, who led Congregation Beth Israel for 32 years.

Sacred To The

Jacob Harris
Born At
Gousawa, Prussia
Died June 14, 1886
Aged 26 Years.

MY BROTHER

An inscription in Hebrew

Man's like a shadow cast
By the sun,
Tarrying
Through the daily race;
Night approaching, the hour
Glass run,
He disappears and leaves no
trace.

But yet - Good deeds die not away
But live - The heralds of the
past;
Rest gently, friends, in thy tomb of clay,
Thy memory shall ever last.
