The Dempster Highway, also referred to as Yukon Highway 5 and Northwest Territories Highway 8, is a highway in Canada that connects the Klondike Highway in Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories on the Mackenzie River delta. The highway crosses the Peel River and the Mackenzie Rivers using a combination of seasonal ferry service and ice bridges. The Peel River is a wilderness river and Fort McPherson is the only community along its banks.

The MV Abraham Francis ferry crosses the Peel River at kilometre 74 of Highway 8, a section of the Dempster highway that starts at the Yukon/N.W.T. border and runs 272 kilometres to Inuvik. There is a second ferry crossing near Tsiigehtchic, where vehicles and passengers cross the Mackenzie River. The ferry service runs from early June to the end of October and operates on demand from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. The ice crossing normally opens to small vehicles in mid-November, to larger vehicles in mid-December, and closes in early May. The gravel loading ramps have to constantly be rebuilt as the river rises and falls, sometimes dramatically over very short periods.

The MV Abraham Francis (1981) has a deck length of 23.7 metres and a crew of 2. It is the only cable ferry in service in NWT. Maximum capacity is 8 vehicles and 40 passengers. Gross Registered Tonnage: 128.22.
