This is one of the historic fog bells which hung in lighthouses in the 19th and 20th centuries.

On the grounds of the VFW Post 3656 war memorial, this bell is hanging from a steel pipe, surrounded by a small rock-walled garden. No explanatory plaque is displayed so we have been unable to find any information on where this bell once hung.
The bell is marked "Blake Bell Co. / U.S. Light House Establishment / 1890". William Blake was an apprentice of Paul Revere. He was involved with, and owned, several metal casting companies in private & with partners from 1820 to 1890. Blake Bell Co. was headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. This is a fog bell which would have hung in a lighthouse. In 1789, the United States Lighthouse Establishment (USLHE) was created and operated under the Department of the Treasury. All U.S. lighthouse ownership was transferred to the government which became the general lighthouse authority. This bell, cast in 1890, was part of this U.S. Lighthouse Establishment.
