La première fosse du site date de 1779. Formellement ouverte par Gaspard Corbesier, l'exploitation aurait cependant débuté dès le XVIe siècle sous l'impulsion des moines de l'Abbaye de Val-Dieu. Les terrains houillers du Pays de Herve et de Blegny en particulier ont la particularité de se trouver à très faible profondeur, voire en surface pour certaines veines. Le puits Marie est creusé en 1849, nommé d'après la fille de Gaspard. Les premières machines à vapeur sont installées en 1850.
Une partie du triage-lavoir est démolie au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La tour d'extraction du puits no 1 est elle entièrement détruite le 10 mai 1940 par les forces armées belges pour empêcher qu'elle ne serve de tour d'observation à l'envahisseur allemand. La production de charbon se fera alors au ralenti via le puits Marie.
La reconstruction s'étalera de 1942 à 1948, avec notamment la construction d'un nouveau lavoir, que l'on peut voir à l'entrée du site. La tour du puits n°1 permettra l'extraction du charbon et le transport du matériel et des hommes, alors que le puits Marie servira au retour d'air et au transport de personnes. Le charbonnage atteindra sa meilleure production en 1970, avec 232 000 tonnes de charbon extraites, et un effectif d'environ 680 personnes

The first pit on the site dates back to 1779. Formally opened by Gaspard Corbesier, the operation would have started in the 16th century under the impetus of the monks of the Abbey of Val-Dieu. The coalfields of the Pays de Herve and Blegny in particular have the particular feature of being located at very shallow depths, or even on the surface for some veins. The Marie well was dug in 1849, named after Gaspard's daughter. The first steam engines were installed in 1850.
Part of the washing yard was demolished during the Second World War. The extraction tower of well no. 1 was completely destroyed on 10 May 1940 by the Belgian armed forces to prevent it from being used as an observation tower by the German invader. Coal production will then be slowed down via the Marie well.
The reconstruction will take place from 1942 to 1948, with the construction of a new washhouse, which can be seen at the entrance to the site. The tower of well n°1 will allow the extraction of coal and the transport of equipment and men, while the Marie well will be used for the return of air and the transport of people. Coal mining will reach its peak production in 1970, with 232,000 tonnes of coal extracted and a workforce of about 680 people.
