This National Park, established in 1947, is named for Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States. During his presidency, five National Parks were established as well as 150 National Forests. He also signed into law the 1906 American Antiquities Act, under which 18 National Monuments were proclaimed.

Roosevelt’s association with North Dakota began with a hunting trip in the early 1880s, and an investment in a cattle ranch near Medora. After the death of his wife and mother in 1884, he returned to North Dakota and established a ranch of his own on the Little Missouri River which he named “Elkhorn.” Although this ranch was unsuccessful (all cattle was lost in the brutal winter of 1886-7), Theodore Roosevelt often attributed his dedication to conservation as president to his time spent in North Dakota.

The park consists of three separate units all in the western part of the state and all along the Little Missouri River. The north and south units contain scenic drives through badlands and flood plains. The third unit is the former site of Roosevelt’s “Elkhorn” ranch. The stamp shows the view from the River Bend overlook in the north unit.
