The Vulture gold mine was established in 1863, just south of Wickenburg. There were no railroads in the state at that time so gold ore had to be hauled by wagon 700 miles to San Francisco. The Southern Pacific railroad crossed southern Arizona in 1877 just as the mine was closed as uneconomical. This cut travel time from the mine to a rail head to 70 miles and the mine re-opened. Then finally the Santa Fe crossed northern Arizona and a line was extended to Wickenburg in 1894. With prosperity returning to the area the need for a station was obvious. The building was constructed in 1895. It is a frame building on a concrete base with clapboard siding. It quickly became the social center of town and most of the town was built up around it. It currently houses the Chamber of Commerce and a visitor center.
