Op 1 juli 1999 werd op initiatief van de toenmalige Bornse
burgemeester Ing. Guus Swillens en het Obbichtse
Ecrevissecomité het Monument van de Overtocht opgericht
en onthult door Kroonprins Willem Alexander. Het
monument, vervaardigd door kunstenaar Louis Reijnen,
symboliseert de “Poort van de Vrijheid” met daarachter
twee grote ganzenvleugels in steen, verwijzend naar de
uitroep van Alva, die het prinselijke leger vergeleek met een
vlucht wilde ganzen. In de poortboog een tekst van Herman Veugelers:
“Gistere blif vandaag tot alles is geheild”, die aangeeft dat het vrijheidsstreven van
eeuwen geleden nog steeds actueel is. Op de sokkels van de rustbank staan twee chronogrammen
van Guus Janssen die verwijzen naar de overtocht in 1568 en de plaatsing van het Monument in
1999.

On 1 July 1999 was on the initiative of the then Bornse
mayor Ing. Guus Swillens and Obbichtse
Ecrevisse committee established the Monument of the Crossing
and unveiled by Crown Prince Willem Alexander. The
monument, made by artist Louis Reijnen,
symbolizes the "Gate of Liberty" with behind it
two large geese wings in stone, referring to the
exclamation of Alva, who compared the royal army with one
flight wild geese. In the gate arch a text by Herman Veugelers:
"Yesterday bliss until everything is hushed", indicating that the freedom strife of
centuries ago is still current. There are two chronograms on the pedestals' couches
by Guus Janssen referring to the crossing in 1568 and the placement of the Monument in
1999.
