"With a floor area of 26,000 m2, it is larger than St Peter's Basilica in Rome and is the work of architect Joseph Poelaert.
The first stone was laid October 31, 1866 during the reign of Leopold II. The Palace was inaugurated on October 15, 1883 after the death of the architect Joseph Poelaert in the presence of King Leopold II who however did not get involved in the construction of this building.
The domain of the Convent of the Ladies of Berlaymont and the park of the hotel of Merode are expropriated by a royal decree of Leopold I, as the islet between the streets of Artifice and Clogs, and give place to its construction to from 1866.
The 75 owners of this part of the Marolles, many of whom lived in their houses in Brussels, were largely compensated, and about one hundred of the inhabitants were rehoused in a garden city built by Poelaert in the Chat district of Uccle.
The last work of Poelaert conceived under Leopold I, the Palace of Justice crowns the reign and summarizes the ideology and thinking of the first generation of the founders of Belgium, focused on the right and the defense of freedoms. Even if, both Leopold I and Poelaert did not see the completion, the last representatives of this generation of founders could thus contemplate as the final bouquet of their creative work of a new parliamentary and democratic state. "D'une surface au sol de 26 000 m2, il est plus vaste que la Basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome. Il est l'œuvre de l'architecte Joseph Poelaert.
La première pierre fut posée le 31 octobre 1866 sous le règne de Léopold II. Le Palais fut inauguré le 15 octobre 1883 après la mort de l'architecte Joseph Poelaert en présence du roi Léopold II qui toutefois ne s'était pas mêlé à la construction de cet édifice.
Le domaine du Couvent des Dames de Berlaymont et le parc de l'hôtel de Mérode sont expropriés par un arrêté royal de Léopold Ier, tout comme l'îlot compris entre les rues d'Artifice et des Sabots, et font place à sa construction à partir de 1866.
Les 75 propriétaires de cette partie des Marolles dont beaucoup habitaient leurs maisons bruxelloises furent largement indemnisés, quant aux habitants, environ une centaine, ils furent relogés dans une cité-jardin construite par Poelaert dans le quartier du Chat à Uccle.
Dernière œuvre de Poelaert conçue sous Léopold Ier, le Palais de Justice en couronne le règne et résume l'idéologie et la pensée de la première génération des fondateurs de la Belgique, axée sur le droit et la défense des libertés. Même si, tant Léopold Ier que Poelaert n'en virent pas l'achèvement, les derniers représentants de cette génération des fondateurs purent ainsi y contempler comme le bouquet final de leur œuvre créatrice d'un nouvel État parlementaire et démocratique. "
