George Keller was an accomplished Irish-American architect who deigned many bridges, houses, monuments, and commercial and public buildings. His most famous creation is Hartford's Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, the first permanent triumphal arch to be built in America. He had a distaste for public cemeteries and chose to have his ashes interred in the east tower of the arch.

A stone embedded next to the stairway in the east tower is inscribed:
