Die Kongresshalle- so der frühere Name- war der US-amerikanische Beitrag zur Internationalen Bauausstellung 1957. Sie wurde als Geschenk Amerikas an das befreundete West-Berlin deklariert. Nach Plänen von Hugh A. Stubbins und unter Mitwirkung von Werner Düttmann und Franz Mocken entstand am Südufer der Spree, mitten im Tiergarten, ein technisch revolutionärer, vielfach nachgeahmter Bau, der auch künstlerisch einen großen Wurf darstellte. Der Berliner Volksmund nannte das Gebäude bald treffend "Schwangere Auster".

Über einem 92 mal 96 Meter messenden Sockelgeschoss erhebt sich die weit ausschwingende Dachkonstruktion. Die Dachfläche wird auf beiden Seiten von Stahlträgern gehalten, die nur auf zwei Punkten aufliegen. Das zu beiden Seiten hin großflächig verglaste Sockelgeschossbeherbergt auf drei gegeneinander versetzten Ebenen die große Empfangshalle, eine Cafeteria, einen Theatersaal mit 400 Sitzplätzen, einen Ausstellungsbereich und weitere kleinere Räume für Kongresse, Seminare und die Verwaltung sowie zur Spreeseite hin ein zweigeschossiges Restaurant. In der eigentlichen Halle ist das Auditorium untergebracht."

The Congress Hall - its former name - was the American contribution to the 1957 International Building Exhibition and was declared America's gift to the friendly West Berlin. Based on plans by Hugh A. Stubbins and with the collaboration of Werner Düttmann and Franz Mocken, a technically revolutionary, often imitated building was created on the south bank of the Spree, in the middle of the Tiergarten, which also represented a major artistic achievement. The Berlin vernacular soon aptly called the building "Pregnant Oyster".
Architecture of the House of World Cultures
The wide swinging roof construction rises above a 92 by 96 metre base floor. The roof surface is held on both sides by steel girders, which only rest on two points. The base floor, which is generously glazed on both sides, accommodates the large reception hall, a cafeteria, a theatre with 400 seats, an exhibition area and other smaller rooms for congresses, seminars and administration on three offset levels, as well as a two-storey restaurant on the Spree side. The auditorium is located in the actual hall."
